First of all, it's ok to care. Fear of the unknown is a big part of the anxiety you may be feeling. You may not have a choice in the matter of hair loss but you can control how you are going to approach this change.
Keep in mind that many people wear wigs
for fun and convenience - more than you know actually. A well fitted quality piece can be undetectable. There is no need to feel self conscious about wearing a wig while you are experiencing hair loss. In fact many clients continue to wear their wigs even if they regain their natural hair because they are so easy and convenient.
Will a wig be comfortable? Will people know?
There have been great advancements in wig making in recent years. The caps are engineered with several different materials to give you a secure, soft fit. A qualified wig salon should be able to alter and tailor any premanufactured piece so that you will feel confident in almost any activity. Custom pieces offer even more options. While human hair is undoubtedly realistic and perfect for longer lengths, advancements in synthetic hair have created durable, natural feeling strands that are perfect for shorter more active styles.
Many people feel quite comfortable with a scarf, hat, or cap while they are at home or out doing their daily tasks. There are a wide variety of options like simple caps that are great for sleeping, gym activities and being around the house as well as easy, stylish scarves and hats. Your salon specialist should be able to teach you how to tie a fabulous scarf.
When should I get a wig? Should I just shave my hair off first?
There is no need to jump the gun in trying to control the situation. You can create a seamless transition between your natural hair and a wig during your course of treatment. You can keep your favored hairstyle as long as possible and once you have your wig and are ready, a short pixie cut is all that is necessary to gain comfort and control. Shaving ones head can often irritate the follicles and scalp and is not usually necessary.
It is best to shop for a wig when you are feeling relaxed and comfortable and when a wig specialist can get a look at your hair style prior to loss. This will enable them to create the best match possible. You may need to return for alterations and fitting once you have lost your natural hair.
How long will it last? What is it like during regrowth?
Duration of temporary hair loss varies with your particular treatment. Many treatments interrupt the growth cycle of the hair and it can begin to fall out about 14 days into treatment. Once treatment is completed hair growth can resume. Initially the texture of your hair may be very different but most often it restores its self. You may begin to color and style it as soon as there is enough length and density to warrant it. Many people wish to wear a wig not only during treatment but until they attain regrowth they feel comfortable with. This can take 6 to 18 months.
Many people are concerned about their eye lashes and eyebrows. Not everyone loses them actually and if you do it will most likely be right at the end of your treatment. Not to worry, the new lashes and brows are right behind the old ones. If the lashes and brows shed with in a week or two you will notice their return. 1/8 inch growth is far more noticeable on your eyes than it is all over the top of your head.
Is human hair better than synthetic?
Both have their benefits. Shorter styles may be easy to maintain with an easy to manage synthetic. Longer styles may benefit from the durability of human hair as it weathers friction much better. A short synthetic wig can easily last a year while one below the shoulder will show wear with in a few weeks. A human hair wig can easily last 1-3 years with proper care. For someone wearing a wig every day for more than a year a human hair wig is an excellent investment.
Both synthetic and human hair wigs should be washed every 30 wears. Synthetics hold their style while human hair wigs can and need to be styled much like your own hair. You may do this at home or choose to have them cleaned and styled by your wig salon.
Custom pieces are design by Brenda
and are usually made with human hair. There are many different kinds of human hair. Brenda will work with both Indian and Virgin European. Indian hair has been processed so it comes in a wide range of colors and has good movement. Because it has been processed additional processing is limited. It is often readily available in stock or can be ordered with in one week.
Virgin European hair has not been treated so it is exceptionally strong and silky. It can be styled into any look and is excellent for those who are wearing their piece for a year or more. Custom European hair wigs are made to order and do take longer to make so it is not always convenient for those on a tight time table.
The wig cap which has the individual hairs tied to it is designed to fit the client using either precise measurements or by taking a mold of the head. If there is a chance you will be wearing your piece long term it is very important to get a great fit by a professional. You may need more than a party wig or fashion wig to create a realistic, comfortable solution which well help you feel confident in day to day wear.
Chemotherapy and other similar medical treatments interrupt cell growth which helps in stalling the cancer cells but also interrupts the other cells in the body. Hair stops growing during treatment but as soon as treatment stops and the body "reboots" and hair growth can return.
